Mibu no Hana Taue,
ritual of transplanting rice in Mibu,
Hiroshima

Held on the first Sunday of June each year in Kitahiroshima Town, Hiroshima Prefecture, Mibu no Hana Taue is one of Japan’s most representative agricultural rituals. This is not merely a reenactment of rice planting.
It is a sacred ceremony in which the deity of the rice fields (Sanbai) is welcomed and prayers are offered for a bountiful harvest.

The entire event unfolds with the splendor and elegance of a living picture scroll.Mibu no Hana Taue has been highly recognized as a valuable tradition preserving Japan’s rice cultivation culture and was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011.

On this special day, the whole town comes alive as a festival.
